Helping Others Help Themselves

Project Briefing Notes - Supporting Sustainability

This project is designed to develop the knowledge Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) businesses require to manage environmental issues in the workplace and help them comply with environmental legislation.  Classroom learning is reinforced with in-house assignments that assist in the implementation and maintenance of an Environmental Management System to the Environmental Standard ISO 14001.

The aim of this project is to provide 100 delegates and up to 100 companies within the SME group, with the skills, knowledge and confidence required to show customers that they are able to compete within a supply chain in a sustainable manner.  These are companies that could be left out of the supply chain network, because they have no track record.

Additionally the project will help ensure that companies operate in compliance with environmental legislation, thus improving their chance of expansion or maybe even survival, in an increasingly competitive global market place.

This training is particularly important for emerging companies, as, along with quality management systems, environmental management systems are the only recognized benchmarks that will enable companies to tender and compete in some markets.

As part of the project, participating delegates will work towards:

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health's
Environmental Management Certificate, level 3

Whilst working toward their qualification, delegates are required to carry out in-house projects within their workplace, which follow the logical, practical steps to achieving the international Environmental Standard, ISO 14001.   These projects will be externally assessed and upon successful completion, delegates will be awarded:

Tamworth and Lichfield College's
Certificate of Competence in Practical Environmental Management

This format ensures a practical gain to the employer, or the self-employed, since the benefit of the work completed remains equally with the delegate and his/her company. The training methods will ensure that 60% of training will take place within the workplace.

Training Format
1 day classroom training every two weeks.  Assignments to be completed in house are set during classroom training.  There is a total of 5 days training plus one day for revision and the examination.  The duration of the programme is 3 months, allowing time for all assignments to be completed and assessed.

Consultation
In addition to the delegate training, each participating company will receive a visit from an experienced environmental practitioner, to carry out an Environmental Review of the company’s activities, offer advice when requested and check the validity of the delegates work.

Eligibility
To qualify for this subsidised programme, the business must be a small or medium sized enterprise, (no more than 250 employees, a turnover not exceeding £11.2m and a balance sheet total of not more than £5.6m) situated within The East Midlands Objective 2 area, which includes the Districts of: Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood and North East Derbyshire.

Costs:
The project is supported by the European Social Fund, via Government Office East Midlands and therefore requires a contribution of only £100 per delegate, from each participating company. All other costs, including registration, course materials, examination fees and certification to The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, are borne by project funding.
